BrewDog Cardiff opening

26/07/2014

Last night, some friends and I headed down to launch of the new, much-anticipated BrewDog pub in Cardiff. Founded in 2007, BrewDog is a microbrewery on a mission to bring their non-corporate beer to the people through their ever-expanding chain of pubs. I must admit, I wasn't overly familiar with the brand before last night, not being a big beer drinker, but there are some long-term fans amongst my group of friends. After last night, it's definitely won me over too.

The pub itself is a really cool space designed with a warehouse kinda look, featuring exposed cables and lightbulbs, and a certain shabby-chic decor. It's very open-plan, with plenty of large booths for big groups of friends, and was absolutely packed for the majority of the evening.

The place had an overwhelmingly friendly atmosphere, and they made a real effort to include everyone in the opening night celebrations - staff and customers alike. We were all offered free glasses of BrewDog's signature Punk IPA beer throughout the evening (which was very, very good), and invited to join in with a toast when one of the founders and the branch manager made their speeches.

The co-founder, James Watt (@BrewDogJames) made a real effort to chat to different groups of customers, which was a nice touch. He came over to do a beer tasting with us, and some how ended up getting roped into a conversation about Scottish politics, sparked by one of my friends.

All in all, the night was really good fun, and I look forward to returning when it's a little bit quieter. I was definitely eyeing up the boardgames that lined the room during the course of the night (they had Cards Against Humanity, hell YES). My BrewDog drink of choice? The Blitz Passionfruit. Highly recommended.

Cardiff residents, add BrewDog to your list of haunts. You won't regret it.

  2. one of these opened in Sheffield and I knew it would be cool just from the way it looks on the outside! Me and my friends were actually stuck between whether it was a pub or a restaurant so thanks for clearing that up haha.
