new music: ben howard, end of the affair

14/08/2014

Okay, so I'm a few of days late posting this one, but Ben Howard's back!
His debut album, Every Kingdom, was a mix of upbeat tunes and darker tracks, and this new offering seems to more closely resemble the latter. Much like his 2012 EP, Burgh Island, Ben's new single End of the Affair is slow and haunting.
He leaves his lyrics plenty of space to breathe, with gaps of silence and echoing vocals. It's a long, building track, but don't fear if you're not a fan of the slower stuff - once we get to about 5 minutes in, we're rewarded with a sudden increase in pace. Accompanied by the frenzied guitar riffs and clashes of cymbals that fans will be more than familiar with, Ben's characteristic shouts and yells kick in as the song begins to reach its climax.
End of the Affair is sure to please existing fans, and reassure them his sound won't be changing too much for album 2 (release date pending). In an interview with XFM, Ben revealed that, in general, the songs on the new album will be longer than his previous releases.
Personally, I'm really excited at the prospect of some new material from Ben - this new track came as a lovely surprise! I've had it on repeat since Zane Lowe announced it as his Hottest Record last week, and shall be eagerly awaiting the new album.
